** SOU WELCOMES PHILLY GUITAR LEGEND CHRIS SHEPHERD TO THE BAND **
Yo Yo - Please take a sec and welcome with us, Mr. Chris Shepherd, who has joined the Urchin on co-lead guitar! For those who don't know his name, he is a legendary philly area guitar freak, he slays and does sh*t that has been making our heads spin in rehearsal!! He is a perfect fit for the band, and the music, because he plays the most out there sh*t, but can straight up wail as well, with tasty melodic leads. He adds that perfect balance to Bill's playing that we have been looking for, for months now. It has not been easy to find someone who has that balance, but it is a necessity for the band. We have been rehearsing with him for a while now, hence all my cryptic "Urchin is back" posts (ha ha, sorry), but have not given him the proper Urchin welcome. We have known Shepherd since the very early days of Urchin, actually - we used to share bills on a pretty regular basis - But we lost touch with him when we started hitting the road heavy; so it's good to be reconnected with an old friend who we've always had so much respect for and knows where we come from, and now he's adding his talents to the band. Kinda full circle. So watch out, you guys are gonna be watching his sh*t in amazement on the boat, and on. Rock and F*cking Roll!! TOMATE

  • ** CHANGES ARE A COMIN FOR THE URCHIN **
Hey... first off... well, some of you may know this already, but it is right for me to make the proper announcement here... After 6 super-rockin' years with the Urchin, Robbie "Seahag" Mangano has left the band. He has made great contributions to SOU over the years, and we wish him the best in his future endeavors.

Second, with so much exciting stuff going on in the Urchin world these days, a run of great shows and mainly preparing for the Rejoice/Black Castle double album release, we have been hard at work getting a new line up together. So, here's the new Urchin... first, and completely fitting and natural, Mikey is going to be moving from the bass, to taking over second lead guitar duties with B-ILL. We met Mikey as the smoking lead guitarist of the Insidious Rays, and we can already tell he will be even happier rockin leads in the band; and his style will add even more power and insanity to the music. And on the bass, we introduce to you, Mr. Conor Kinsman. Along with Mikey, Conor is from the Bethlehem PA music scene, and is pretty much the most solid and fucking driving bass players I have ever played with... when he plays, he basically wants to be heard and makes his prescence known, and keeps me grounded, which is what I need because I'm always pushing tempos, ha ha. We welcome him to the Urchin machine, and cannot wait to do our first show with him. Here's a picture of him and I hope that he keeps the makeup on for us:
    ok

So, we look forward to unveiling the new SOU, version 2009, in Bethlehem later on the 18th, and then the next week on our New England run. Get ready, because we are fucking beyond ready to rock and keep the fire burning! Now, let us get back to rehearsing, Conor has a lot of songs to learn!

See ya in a few weeks, Tomato

We made the "SOU Make The Diamond" movie a few years back, and offered it in some giveaways, but never officially did anything with it. It is formatted here in MP4 for free download for Ipods, etc - right click and download it to your desktop, then pull it into your itunes or whatever. It is some pretty ghetto footage, considering the studio was pretty dark most of the time, but it is a pretty hilarious account of our trip making the album. Looking back on it now, I realize we were drunk though most of it - how the hell did that album come out so polished?? Enjoy!

  • ** REJOICE RELEASE UPDATE & 2008 SHOW/TOUR INFO **
We have some scenarios in the works to get the new SOU album, Rejoice, out officially as soon as possible...  We have been exploring "traditional" label possibilities, as well as distribution possibilities and other "non-traditional" ways to get the album out the way it was intended (as a double album, with "Rejoice" being disc one and "Black Castle" being disc two).  We will be using our SXSW Show on March 14th as a sort of last-call to explore these scenarios; But, we wanted to let you in on this all now, in case you know anyone who is putting together any new label-type situations out there that we might want to check out before then.  Please get them to contact us directly at steve.pennsylvania@soundofurchin.com.  Also, as far as this years' touring goes, we are opting to do only selective special shows/short runs this year (like the shows above), while we prepare for the album release, as opposed to our usual 5 week US tours.  All good stuff. love THE URCHIN

  • HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE URCHIN!!!
happy holidays and happy new year from the urchin. this year was a combination of a lot of hard work and struggle and then a lot of fun and playing. basically we started the year in the studio, hell bent on finishing the album which became "rejoice", but with pretty much all odds against us... doing it all ourselves was the way to go, and had to be done, but this meant that there was no support or money from a label, and on top of that a music industry that has pretty much reached as low as it could possibly go without crumbling, and on top of that not so much love for rock anymore. but we don't care. we know what we're doing and why we're doing it. im not gonna bitch about it, because you know this too. anyway, we pushed on, and on, and scrounged wherever we could to make the album. and we fuckin did, and i am so proud of the music on the album, the playing really represents the players and offers up everything we have to give. this year we also welcomed mikey to the band on bass, and he has brought such a fresh and great attitude to the songs old and new, and to the band. he is a beyond amazing player and has a fire in his bass playing that drives the songs and also has a rooted style that holds the band together. and on top of that, hes a blast to hang out with on the road and has a totally fucked up sense of humor. we didnt tour until the summer, due to making the album, but the summer run was a shitload of fun and the new songs started getting some road-life to them, and the crowds were better than ever. and then the fall "new album launch" tour was jst the pinnacle of everything we've done so far... 33 shows in 36 days, a full 4 person crew, and an arena-style light show. it was an intense run, but we got right into mode the first night... everyone just fell into their roles right away and continued on... we worked hard and we played harder... we saw sunrises across the country and in all times zones. rock n roll. and again, the crowds were better than ever, requesting rejoice songs, and rockin out to us hard. i dont wanna get all stupid on ya, but i really feel lucky in this day and age to have the kinds of people we have at our shows... we get to see a lot of bands out there, and i can't tell you how many bored and unmotivated crowds there are, but you know this. but whatever town we walk in to, there's people ready to rock, fist pump, dance, sing, and make us feel at home. i remember the day where we would give our all to crowds and just get folded arms back at us... but now the party's there every night, and the nights bleed into each other on tour because it sometimes seems like the same intense group of people in every city. anyway, im just sayin thanks for putting yer rock trust in us, we will always give 1000 percent. i think ive said enough, i gotta go cook me some dinner, but thanks for an awesome year, have a great holiday and watch out because we are releasing "rejoice" officially in 2008 and we already have some very cool things planned. rock and fucking roll forever, and i mean that. love, tomato

  • BOAT SHOW RECAP & UPDATE!!
hey, its been a while since i posted, we have been so busy getting ready for the boat, finishing the new album, and getting the tour together. it has been an insane summer to say the least! but awesome as well. honestly, every time i think we've had the best show of our life as a band, i think we'll never be able to hit that high again. well, this past, and last, boat show weekend was absolutely the pinnacle of everything we've done up to this point. the boat show was completely nuts from the first notes to the absolute last... even after we finished the set, "war pigs" came on the pa and the crowd kept singing. i think the greatest thing for me is that the crowd was singing all night with us, there really is no high like that, it's goosebumps type rock shit. really. i think police helicopters was the highlight for me, scary skull eyes was up there too, everything really... even the steely dan, ha ha. oh yeah, and having scotty choc up there was a huge thing for us, me and scott go back to the age of 14 or so, he was in a rival band in town that played all this prog-ish type arena rock and we used to compete in battle of the bands and stuff like that. he was like the star guitar player of the county, all the girls loved him. it was so great to have him on stage playing songs we haven't played together in years. it was also great to have mikey and johnny up there playing together again as well. and dan from wrong too. it was just a celebration of our little world of musicians. good shit. and then coney island the next day! man, i didn't know if i was gonna be able to make it through another show, considering jake from rocks off kept the boat out till almost 4am! so basically we did two extreme shows in one day. but we got to coney and the adrenaline started kicking in, we rode some rides, had a rooftop barbeque above the cha chas, watched girls girls girls and tragedy, who both were awesome and insane at the same time, then we hit the stage. i was totally riding high, had a nice buzz from the jack that girls girls girls didnt finish, and me and bill started doing an impromtu zeppelin-fest soundcheck. because of the soundcheck, the rest of the set just continued in that direction, im really looking forward to hearing a tape of it. it was like us just having fun and jamming, but there was a mosh pit going on the whole time, even for the mellow tunes. other than the fact that we blew the power out of the joint for about 15 minutes (not the first time that happened to us), the show was a blast. it was fun to play songs like i left, and let it rain, songs we dont play much at all, and we only repeated a few songs from the night before... they were two completely different gigs. anyway, thanks to the people who came out and rocked and pushed and sang and lost their balance on the boat and at coney. next year we'll come up with some other kind of event that will be just like the boat show, but in some other kind of fucked up venue. on the new album update... we are getting ready to mix it right now, so we it will be done right before we hit the road at the end of sept! damn, it's stressing me out. anyway, the rough mixes are sounding so good to us, and we have tried them out on a few different stereos and even at the rough stage it is holding up real well. we have achieved our goal for this album, and that's what matters most to us, now we cant wait for you guys to hear it. soon. alright, gotta run, im still riding the high from the boat... more later...

  • ** SOU WELCOME OUR NEW BASS PLAYER **
    sou 2007
This past weekend we introduced our new bass player, Michael "Mikey Retard" Davidson, with three beyond kick ass shows in New England. Even though we have been working with him for almost three months now in rehearsal, there is no trial by fire like two three hour shows at Nectars in Burlington. He didn't miss a trick as I called out songs on the fly like always, spanning every phase of the band, including all of our new stuff. He even knows songs that we don't know well anymore, which makes him actually the most knowledgeable urchin guy at the moment (he's like, "you guys know "Happy"?"). And on top of it, he took the extended jams into places that we have never gone. I knew he was gonna do us right, but I didn't really know how the crowd would accept a new bass player, and within a few songs they were all over his driving shit and mesa boogie bass stack, eventually chanting retard praises. Even though we've known Mikey's playing for years through the Insidious Rays, there is a whole new, intense live energy and excitement that it's bringing to us. We can't wait to melt more skulls real soon. watch out. tomato

  • NEW ALBUM UPDATE 4!
yo yo - so, we have been crazy busy these days. in addition to piling up tracks on the new album in the studio, we have been getting our live chops up and running in the rehearsal studio. it feels great to be preparing for some live shows again! we are working on old shit, new shit, and have been throwing around some new covers for the nectars show - and the covers are pretty random at that, we are stretching out in that area, ha ha. we don't want to give the same show two nights in a row, so we're getting together as much variety as possible. let us know if ya have any suggestions or requests, on our songs you might want to hear and/or covers. also, in case ya didn't see, we added a providence rhode island date for the wednesday before the burlington shows. and as far as major touring goes, we are looking to do a huge 5 week tour, but are not sure of the exact time frame yet. we should know pretty soon, but we want to make sure that we will have the album completely done and mastered by the tour. we have a pretty cool plan worked out, to make the tour more special, and the album needs to be done in order for us to see it through. we want to get on the road tomorrow, but we want to have it coincide with the start of the new album phase. more updates soon! pumped as ever, tomato

  • NEW ALBUM UPDATE 3!
holy shit! more tracks done! i wish we could share it now, but it is only gonna get better. i don't really know what else to write about now, except to say that this is far the best thing we have ever done, period. i cannot wait for people to hear it. tomato

  • NEW ALBUM UPDATE 2!
People have been asking when the release date will be... we don't have any official release date yet. if we stay on schedule right now we are looking to master the album in the beginning of may. that means the album will be completely done then. we are probably going to do the same thing we did with the diamond, where we press a limited edition version soon after the mastering and then prepare for the official release for sometime hopefully in the fall. that's all a rough plan right now, nothing set in stone. tomato

  • NEW ALBUM UPDATE 1!
uh-oh! basic tracks are done for the new urchin album! holy shit, we are psyched. we have 18 tracks laid down, and about 6-8 takes of each song to choose from. the shit is sounding so good. bill and hag are playing their asses off on the recordings. we cannot wait to get it done, mixed and mastered. it sounds like us live, has all the energy, and the sound is pristine, heavy and deep as well. the performances, which is most important, are on fire, not held back by anything. more later... tomato

  • SOU NEW YEAR UPDATE
Happy New Year! Well, 2006 was a pretty fucked up year for me personally, I am so glad it is over. Time to start a new year and put that shit to rest. As far as urchin was concerned, it was actually a great year, we spent winter 06 writing new songs for the upcoming album, doing various one-off shows as well as some great moistboyz shows on the side, had our most successful US tour to date - the "symptoms 06 tour", started pre-production for the new album in the fall, then worked out the music in front of crowds on the fall "studio warm-up tour". all in all a great year. but through it i had some fucked up visits to the ER in the fall, which messed up my head. everything's cool right now, though, and it was kinda funny, because all throughout my ER visits we were rocking right through it, in most cases that same night, right after i waas discharged. i don't really have a good explanation for all the bad-happenings in the fall really, ya know, sometimes things just all kind of hit ya at once and you have to ride it. that can be with good stuff or bad stuff as you know, in this case it was just plain weird stuff. i'm healthier than ever though, in case yer wondering, and very excited about 2007. Finally, we get to put out a new album! It is gonna kick ass, if ya ask me, or the rest of the guys, ha ha. no seriously, it's gonna kick ass. the problem right now is how do we get the album down to a simple 12 or so songs. it might have to be a 20 song album. time will tell on that one. anyway, it will be a new phase, and you know we've been through many phases already - if you want to catch up on all our phases, go check out the new discography we just put up here. regardless, with the record business deep in the shitter, and with the most shamefull representation of new music out there ever in my lifetime, it will be great to put out something full of passion, creativity, and dual leads from two of the best living guitarists around, and i mean that. it's been a while since we put out new music, too long if ya ask me. fuck, thin lizzy put out 2 albums a year throughout their career! and they were all classics! so maybe we can do something about that and say fuck what the industry wants, and put out quality music more than once every two years! yeah, that's my resolution for 07. i didn't have one until this second. thanks. rock and roll forever. really. tomato

  • WHAT HAS THE URCHIN BEEN UP TO ALL WINTER????
We have been getting lots of e-mails regarding where Urchin has been this winter, so here's the scoop straight from the Tomato's mouth (from the Urchin message board)...

"Yo yo - we are doin great actually. We have been holed up in the "Apes On Ice Professional Recording Facilities" studio and have over twenty new tunes demo'd for the forthcoming yet-untitled album, and at least another twenty more in the works. We are working out how the album will be properly recorded, produced, etc, and that should start forming soon. I can't wait to get this going, and for people to hear this shit. We are real real pscyhed about the new music! Our booking agent is getting close to finishing the booking for the june "symptoms 06" u.s. tour - we will announce the dates fairly soon. The boat show is gonna be a two day event, 8/11 & 12, first night on the boat, second night on coney island. That's pretty much what's been going on. We have been laying low from gigging, but have been totally busy getting ready for the next fight. I personally can't wait to get playing again, and hitting the road, but we needed to take the winter to hibernate in the lab. Rock and roll is and will always be king. Tomate"

download some MP3s from a Portland, OR show from last April. We just got hold of this excellent quality board mix from the show, and wanted to share. It's dry, like all board mixes, but other than that, these are fierce performances of Diamond songs. The highlight is definitely the 11 minute version of The Diamond - something must have been in the air that night. Enjoy!!

  • URCHIN TO RECORD SECOND FULL LENGTH RCA CD
very preliminary recording has begun on tracks for a second full length rca urchin album, at tomato's (drummer/lead singer) studio, the "apes on ice professional recording facilities", in brooklyn, ny. tomato says... "once we get the basic form of the album's tunes and direction here in my home studio, we will look for the right producer to bring the songs to the next level, then move camp to an nyc studio to pull it all together. we have a new level of fire and drive right now in us that is fueling the process, and have been on the road most of the summer, which has allowed the songs to grow with time in the summer heat. i don't know if all the songs we are writing will make it onto the record, but right now some of the favorites are called "bomb me", "three men and a baby", and "not everybody loves raymond". we hope to have the cd out in march 2003.
