    ** REJOICE RELEASE UPDATE & 2008 SHOW/TOUR INFO **
We have some scenarios in the works to get the new SOU album, Rejoice, out officially as soon as possible...  We have been exploring "traditional" label possibilities, as well as distribution possibilities and other "non-traditional" ways to get the album out the way it was intended (as a double album, with "Rejoice" being disc one and "Black Castle" being disc two).  We will be using our SXSW Show on March 14th as a sort of last-call to explore these scenarios; But, we wanted to let you in on this all now, in case you know anyone who is putting together any new label-type situations out there that we might want to check out before then.  Please get them to contact us directly at steve.pennsylvania@soundofurchin.com.  Also, as far as this years' touring goes, we are opting to do only selective special shows/short runs this year (like the shows above), while we prepare for the album release, as opposed to our usual 5 week US tours.  All good stuff. love THE URCHIN

    HAPPY HOLIDAYS FROM THE URCHIN!!!
happy holidays and happy new year from the urchin. this year was a combination of a lot of hard work and struggle and then a lot of fun and playing. basically we started the year in the studio, hell bent on finishing the album which became "rejoice", but with pretty much all odds against us... doing it all ourselves was the way to go, and had to be done, but this meant that there was no support or money from a label, and on top of that a music industry that has pretty much reached as low as it could possibly go without crumbling, and on top of that not so much love for rock anymore. but we don't care. we know what we're doing and why we're doing it. im not gonna bitch about it, because you know this too. anyway, we pushed on, and on, and scrounged wherever we could to make the album. and we fuckin did, and i am so proud of the music on the album, the playing really represents the players and offers up everything we have to give. this year we also welcomed mikey to the band on bass, and he has brought such a fresh and great attitude to the songs old and new, and to the band. he is a beyond amazing player and has a fire in his bass playing that drives the songs and also has a rooted style that holds the band together. and on top of that, hes a blast to hang out with on the road and has a totally fucked up sense of humor. we didnt tour until the summer, due to making the album, but the summer run was a shitload of fun and the new songs started getting some road-life to them, and the crowds were better than ever. and then the fall "new album launch" tour was jst the pinnacle of everything we've done so far... 33 shows in 36 days, a full 4 person crew, and an arena-style light show. it was an intense run, but we got right into mode the first night... everyone just fell into their roles right away and continued on... we worked hard and we played harder... we saw sunrises across the country and in all times zones. rock n roll. and again, the crowds were better than ever, requesting rejoice songs, and rockin out to us hard. i dont wanna get all stupid on ya, but i really feel lucky in this day and age to have the kinds of people we have at our shows... we get to see a lot of bands out there, and i can't tell you how many bored and unmotivated crowds there are, but you know this. but whatever town we walk in to, there's people ready to rock, fist pump, dance, sing, and make us feel at home. i remember the day where we would give our all to crowds and just get folded arms back at us... but now the party's there every night, and the nights bleed into each other on tour because it sometimes seems like the same intense group of people in every city. anyway, im just sayin thanks for putting yer rock trust in us, we will always give 1000 percent. i think ive said enough, i gotta go cook me some dinner, but thanks for an awesome year, have a great holiday and watch out because we are releasing "rejoice" officially in 2008 and we already have some very cool things planned. rock and fucking roll forever, and i mean that. love, tomato

  • BOAT SHOW RECAP & UPDATE!!
hey, its been a while since i posted, we have been so busy getting ready for the boat, finishing the new album, and getting the tour together. it has been an insane summer to say the least! but awesome as well. honestly, every time i think we've had the best show of our life as a band, i think we'll never be able to hit that high again. well, this past, and last, boat show weekend was absolutely the pinnacle of everything we've done up to this point. the boat show was completely nuts from the first notes to the absolute last... even after we finished the set, "war pigs" came on the pa and the crowd kept singing. i think the greatest thing for me is that the crowd was singing all night with us, there really is no high like that, it's goosebumps type rock shit. really. i think police helicopters was the highlight for me, scary skull eyes was up there too, everything really... even the steely dan, ha ha. oh yeah, and having scotty choc up there was a huge thing for us, me and scott go back to the age of 14 or so, he was in a rival band in town that played all this prog-ish type arena rock and we used to compete in battle of the bands and stuff like that. he was like the star guitar player of the county, all the girls loved him. it was so great to have him on stage playing songs we haven't played together in years. it was also great to have mikey and johnny up there playing together again as well. and dan from wrong too. it was just a celebration of our little world of musicians. good shit. and then coney island the next day! man, i didn't know if i was gonna be able to make it through another show, considering jake from rocks off kept the boat out till almost 4am! so basically we did two extreme shows in one day. but we got to coney and the adrenaline started kicking in, we rode some rides, had a rooftop barbeque above the cha chas, watched girls girls girls and tragedy, who both were awesome and insane at the same time, then we hit the stage. i was totally riding high, had a nice buzz from the jack that girls girls girls didnt finish, and me and bill started doing an impromtu zeppelin-fest soundcheck. because of the soundcheck, the rest of the set just continued in that direction, im really looking forward to hearing a tape of it. it was like us just having fun and jamming, but there was a mosh pit going on the whole time, even for the mellow tunes. other than the fact that we blew the power out of the joint for about 15 minutes (not the first time that happened to us), the show was a blast. it was fun to play songs like i left, and let it rain, songs we dont play much at all, and we only repeated a few songs from the night before... they were two completely different gigs. anyway, thanks to the people who came out and rocked and pushed and sang and lost their balance on the boat and at coney. next year we'll come up with some other kind of event that will be just like the boat show, but in some other kind of fucked up venue. on the new album update... we are getting ready to mix it right now, so we it will be done right before we hit the road at the end of sept! damn, it's stressing me out. anyway, the rough mixes are sounding so good to us, and we have tried them out on a few different stereos and even at the rough stage it is holding up real well. we have achieved our goal for this album, and that's what matters most to us, now we cant wait for you guys to hear it. soon. alright, gotta run, im still riding the high from the boat... more later...

  • ** SOU WELCOME OUR NEW BASS PLAYER **

This past weekend we introduced our new bass player, Michael "Mikey Retard" Davidson, with three beyond kick ass shows in New England. Even though we have been working with him for almost three months now in rehearsal, there is no trial by fire like two three hour shows at Nectars in Burlington. He didn't miss a trick as I called out songs on the fly like always, spanning every phase of the band, including all of our new stuff. He even knows songs that we don't know well anymore, which makes him actually the most knowledgeable urchin guy at the moment (he's like, "you guys know "Happy"?"). And on top of it, he took the extended jams into places that we have never gone. I knew he was gonna do us right, but I didn't really know how the crowd would accept a new bass player, and within a few songs they were all over his driving shit and mesa boogie bass stack, eventually chanting retard praises. Even though we've known Mikey's playing for years through the Insidious Rays, there is a whole new, intense live energy and excitement that it's bringing to us. We can't wait to melt more skulls real soon. watch out. tomato
